Homeland has been picking up prizes right and left this award season, as well as the previous one, and I get totally excited with every nomination and win. This show deserves every prize and nomination it has already been awarded and then some! Since the show´s premiere in the fall of 2011 I´ve been absolutely crazy about it.
Claire Danes has been a long-time favorite actress of mine. Ever since her teenage days on "My so-called life" I have followed and loved her performances. Not every one of her movies has been great, in fact most of them are quite "forgettable". However she was outstanding in all of them.
Her acting skills and ability to make every character seem real and believable is something to be envied and admired. And the fact that she´s not afraid to look less than perfect (ugly-cry anyone...) makes her stand out and able to excel.
Claire Danes has an incredible emotional range and never comes off flat or one-dimentional. Her cry is one of my favorite parts of her as an actor. It seems so real and relatable. The way she looks when she cries, the raw emotions, the vulnerability, the fear, the anger the turmoil... She somehow has the ability to convey it all.
Many people don´t like her "ugly-cry", there are even entire web pages devoted to making fun of it. But I admire it greatly!
Damian Lewis is a new acquaintance and I haven´t seen any of his previous work. But that doesn´t stop me from labeling him a fantastic actor. Just like Claire, he too has a great emotional range, and in the role of Nicholas Brody he is really able to put it to good use. Brody is such a diverse character but Damian Lewis portrays all his different "states of mind" with great conviction. Be it the brutal coldblooded killer/terrorist or the fragile, honest, loving sides of Brody.
It amazes me how he can make it all seem credible and one person.
Mandy Patinkin also has to be mentioned. I have seen and enjoyed some of his previous work and the role of Saul really shows him at his best. He brings such wisdom, stability and warmth to this show without seeming stereotypical at all. Saul isn´t a big "softy" turning a blind eye. He is warm hearted and brutally honest, he is gracious and still demands excellence, he gives people a second chance but is also wise enough to keep a close eye on them. He is both the warm heart, the strategic mind and the vigilant eyes of this show.
And now, my absolute favorite part of Homeland, the Carrie-Brody relationship.
I love how complicated this enemies-yet-lovers relationship is and their chemistry gives me goosebumps. Brody is such a complex character and always leaves you wondering who he really is. Is he being honest this time or is he playing Carrie, his wife, Abu Nazir? Or all of them? He is an enigma, yet even with all his demons and skeletons in the closet he turns to Carrie and opens up to her. The one who knows more of his history and betrayals than anyone, and the one who can reveal to everyone what he´s really like.
And Carrie is in the same situation. Brody was/might still be the terrorist she has been hunting for years and now he´s even admitted to it. But Brody also knows of her bipolar condition and the unconventional ways in which she works. If he wanted or needed to he could bring her down, as he has done in the past, and leave her life in ruins. Again.
Knowing all this, she still loves Brody and wants to be with him. And this is why I love this show. It shows a seemingly totally impossible relationship where you never know who´s playing who, mixed with moments of real closeness, honesty and dare I say love.
These two totally turn each other on and they let loose when they´re together. But they also seem to be playing with fire, never knowing if/when it´s going to blow up to destroy them.
This show really keeps me at the edge of my seat. It continuously keeps me guessing what will happen next, but rarely do I get it right. Homeland is full of twists and turns but still manages to draw a plausible storyline.

I didn´t think I´d ever be this crazy about a tv drama/action/crime series. I usually like the ones with a more down to earth plot. Homeland has by no means got an everyday-kind-of-storyline. What goes on in this show only happens to very few people in real life. In that aspect the storyline isn´t relatable at all. (Maybe that is why it can portray very scary and violent scenarios without scaring me.)
But the characters are relatable. To me Homeland is all about excellent actors portraying relatable characters that are complex, emotional and very human. And in the centre of it all the Carrie-Brody relationship. Not particularly romantic, but full of attraction, deceit, honesty, lust and love.
